— RAM DASS
Spiritual teacher and author · 1931 – 2019
Ram Dass, born Richard Alpert, was an American spiritual teacher and former Harvard psychologist whose work with Timothy Leary on psychedelics made him a counterculture figure. After meeting guru Neem Karoli Baba in India in 1967, he took the name Ram Dass ('servant of God') and wrote the landmark book Be Here Now (1971). He spent the rest of his life teaching Eastern spirituality, compassion and conscious aging to Western audiences.
